seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere. Headed toward the horizon maybe. Another night, another day. The seasons come and go. I’ve spent a lot of time at my window recently, my private box seat from where I watch the world pass by. How long have we been here, how many days have gone by, will the scenery change, does this snow ever melt? There’s a certain ache in my bones. The kind of ache that longs for-that dreams for the bright green buds of spring. Sprouting up from the ground, reaching toward the heavens, unfurling their long sleepy arms in hopes to embrace the warm orange sun above.The silken petals of tulips, crocuses, forsythias, pansies,and violas will be wet with dew, their blossoms outstretched-probably opening for the first time with a sigh of relief. A sigh they have held in all winter long. All that uncertainty in the soil, it had to go somewhere. I guess it can only go upward until the wind grabs hold and carries it off. Eventually, there isn’t much left. If there is anything, it falls apart and keeps floating up, finding its way back to the clouds again, passing busily overhead. They seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere. 21:06:41 +0000 cody tumblin https://codytumblin.com/Stray-Light-Shadow-Between Stray Light Shadow Between, a solo exhibition of new work at Devening Projects January 13 - February 16, 2019 Stray Light Shadow Between is a sum of many moving parts. The paintings have a kind of restlessness on their surfaces; they don’t seek a specific end or conclusion. Many movements and gestures come together in irregular rhythms, often interrupted by sprawling seams and stray threads that stand as a testament to their making. Their faces show evidence of time and friction, odds and ends rubbing up against one another, creating sparks of light and swirls of murky indecision. Some paintings start with light: an image of the Moon or Sun, or the Sky on a particular time of day–a distant memory sewn into the heart of the painting. But when light encounters resistance, it casts a shadow. This shadow stretches the light until it extinguishes, just as the evening sky smolders in its final moments. Bands of light eat one another until the stars show their faces. It is in these dark, infinite facets that we find countless moments of uncertainty, longing, and anxiety; a miraculous spectrum containing glistening bits of this and that. That brings us back to the assembly of many parts; making a painting that starts off in a familiar place of memory and letting it slowly spin out of control and orchestrate its own character. Making a painting in this way is similar to making a soup – the kind of soup that uses the odds and ends of your pantry to arrive at a place that is both spectacular, strange, and hopefully edible. You start off with what you know, the foundations of your broth, and as you begin to gain confidence, the moves become riskier and you find yourself adding an unnecessary amount of fish sauce or unexplainable dashes of nutmeg. As the soup nears its completion, the flame turned down to a low simmer, you look down into the pot and witness a miraculous assembly of oil and fat– incandescent blips of light dancing on an amber Today’s Special, solo show held at Mild Climate in Nashville, TN, Summer of 2017. Opening night was a community potluck eaten off second hand plates and bowls that were glazed with notes/ excerpts from my sketchbooks. The tablecloths were made from failed paintings and studio remnants. No paintings were hung for this event. 2 months of programming included: Leftover Nights: the public brought their leftovers to the gallery once a week and I brought a microwave from home so we could all share meals together. Recipe Swaps: both in person and online to be released as a future recipe book with Extended Play Press. Let someone tell you how they love you with a little bit of salt, olive oil, and rosemary and you’ll see what I mean. It could do you some good. I mean have you ever tasted a perfectly ripe, perfectly caramelized fried plantain? Have you ever ripped open a fresh round of sourdough to find steamy ghosts of desire haunting your olfactory senses? I truly believe that when Dante pierces the skin of the universe and looks upon the Love that moves the earth and stars, he was gazing into a deep bowl of warm tomato soup with a sprig of fresh basil on top. It’s a lot like learning anything, really. Cooking is a little awkward at first, but it’s honest work. A few burns, grease fires, and a couple years of overcooking chicken can actually teach you the deeper mysteries of life. Just grab a few things you like and boil them, fry them, bake them. Little by little you’ll find small miracles. A pinch of sugar to ease the acidity of a ripe tomato, a drizzle of honey to tenderize a hunk of meat, and a single bay leaf (what the hell is a bayleaf really?) can teach your chicken noodle soup a mighty trick. The “meal” shouldn’t be a desperate grab for what leftover stillness we have in our busy lives. “Comfort Food” isn’t fried chicken and green beans at a Cracker Barrel, it’s sharing that last can of pinto beans in your pantry with someone because you happen to have half an onion and some tortillas lying around. Haven’t you ever read Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul? When you’re down on your luck and you’ve got nobody around to love you, try putting a little bit of butter, sugar, and cinnamon on a stale biscuit and broil at 400 for 3 minutes. Your heart just might soar, if even for a moment. Today’s Special is whatever you’ve got left in the fridge, whatever you’ve got the energy to put together in a pan or a pot at the end of long day.
